Question Christmas come early, well sort of...

People I need some help here!

About 40 minutes ago a UPS driver just delivered a box to me from my Dad, Confused I signed off on it brought it in and opened it. There inside was his old laptop computer that he purchased back in mid 2003. It was his old Sony Vaio PCG-V505EXP, there was a note inside the box. My Dad advised that the laptop was empty, no operating system on it, the hard drive was deleted, to keep his personal information safe. He also typed the basic specs of the machine, which is as follows.....

    Sony Vaio PCG-V505EXP
    Pentium M Centrino @ 1.5gig's of power
    512mb of DDR-1 RAM
    60 Gig Sony Hard Drive
    CD-RW/DVD drive

That's about all the technical data, now from what I can tell on my own by inspecting the laptop is that it has two (2) USB ports, 1 external firewire port, 1 RGB video port, a card slot of some kind and 1 headphone and 1 microphone jack.

I know the video solution for the device is a Radeon card of some type, for there's a sticker on the back that says " ATI Mobility Radeon Certified" . Now the laptop did come with a drivers disk, thank God, but it is void of an operating systems disk, or O.S. recovery disk, nothing.

I remember my Dad had Windows Millennium Edition on it and he appeared to like it. I think he had Office 2000 on it, and so forth.

Now my question to all of you is this, based on those spec's what do I put on it? I can't put my new Windows XP Pro 64 on it, it only came with one license, the same is true for both my Windows Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate 64, they only have one license for each. Now I do have an old copy of both Windows Millennium Edition & Windows 98 S.E. and even a old copy of Windows 2000 Professional laying around, do I go for one of them? I don't think this old tired laptop could handle anything that is considered to be the "latest & greatest"! Should I go back to Best Buy and buy another copy of Windows XP Professional 64 or 32, please give some direction here folks.

I figure that my Toshiba x205 2 Sli laptop can be my primary floater and this new one can maybe hang out with me in bed or something and can be an internet machine.

Thanks in advance for any advise that I might get......

    That's cool dude.
    Couple of pointers.

DO NOT Under ANY Circumstances put Windows ME on it. Even Microsoft themselves stated it was the worst piece of software they'd ever created.

DO NOT put Windows Vista or 7 on it - it will GRIND to a halt and I don't mean grind like a fine woman getting dirty with ya. I mean it was run like a bag of crap.

Do not waste your time with a 64bit OS on it. It doesn't need a 64bit OS and to be honest, I'm not quite so sure if it will run a 64bit OS.

I would consider having a go at running Windows XP 32bit on it and when you've loaded it, switch it into Classic mode for less resource usage. You could consider Windows 98 SE but XP should be fine. Especially if you added another 512Mb of RAM.

    There's always Linux.

Go download PcLinuxOS from www.distrowatch.org, burn it to a disc, and slap it in the drive. It will get you by till you pick an OS, it will be a lot more secure than XP or 98 especially, it will have nice features, and media compatibility right out of the box.

Give it a shot - you've got nothing to lose except a CD-R.

    Update:

I am running to the mountains with everything that Spar had to say! After doing some research and calling around, the only operating system that was really recommended was Windows XP 32bit. So I just got back from Best Buy, where I purchased myself another copy of Windows XP, this time I got the 32bit version, good call Spar, the Geek Squad recommended the same as you did, nice price to. Also after going to Sony's web site and looking up the laptop, it said that the thing can handle up to, but no greater than 2 gigs of DDR-1 RAM, so I bought a 2 gig little stick, I will just take out the 512mb already in there and put it in my junk box. I will go about re-building the laptop in the morning.

Beef: Thanks for the recommendation of running Linux, it sounded interesting but due to the fact that I know nothing about that O.S., I thought it safe to stick with Microsoft. I'm looking forward in seeing this little baby in action.

I sure hope so, this purchase set me back some coin! I'm excited, want to see what this old girl can do!

Thank you Spar for the good advise........

To bad I can't upgrade the CPU, 1.5 gig's of power seems kind of slow to me. My Toshiba x205 has 2.11 gig's, my desktop has a 3.5 gig and my little micro-server has a nice 2.4 gig..............we will see, who knows maybe it all will come together nicely.

I would have recommended throwing Win 2000 on there, but since you spent the money on XP, it will work nicely.

Mobile processors work differently to desktop processors LBJ. 1.5Ghz is respectable.

Most entry level laptops are around 1.8 - 2Ghz core duos. That machine will do you nicely for most stuff. You just won't be able to play the latest and greatest games.

It'll play your porn ok though

Smile Out of the ashes rises the little Sony.....

Well folks I think we did it!

About 15 minutes ago, I put the finishing touches on what appears to be a promising little laptop computer. Before I started today, I opted to open the sucker up, un-mounted the rear cover panels, got the can of compressed air and took the thing outside and blew away, talk about tons of dust and what appeared to be lint! Put it all back together, then went for the RAM exchange, went from the 512mb's to the 2 gig stick, that went smoothly. Plugged it in, and just to be safe turned it on, got all the way up to the system warning me about "no operating system detected".

Busted open my new copy of Win XP 32bit, slapped that into the cd drive, restarted the computer, and presto the rest can we say is windows installation history. This little sucker took to Windows like a dry sponge in a sink of water, it sucked it up! The install went flawlessly, not even a single burp, hick-up or fart. After windows came "drivers", thank God for the drivers CD, loaded it in and oh my God, the thing was a .exe disk, the sucker did it all by itself, loading the drivers one by one, in order, all I did was sit back, suck on my coffee and enjoy the show.

Next I went through Windows and made some key adjustments, double checked the "device manager", everything was ok, everything was accounted for. Next I got the little guy configured for my wireless network, that was easy, went to Comcasts web site and downloaded the latest McAfee all in one suite. Last, I put the finishing touch, by installing Microsoft's Office 2003, figured the laptop was a built in 2003, might as well keep the software as close to it's era as I can.

So there we go, another computer for the LBJ household. What does that make now, my Son's Acer, both my desktop, one laptop, one micro-server now the Sony, what like 5 PC's in the same house, ton's of fun!

Now I just need to put some misc. item on it, like flash player, win-amp, shockwave, win-rar, a burning program, my FTP program, and some entertaining and small pop-cap games. Later I'm going back to Best Buy and purchasing a nice laptop travel bag for this little guy, and an external USB mouse, I hate using laptop touch pads for a mouse.

Well time to go and mess around with the Sony some more.............thanks Spar again for the advise, so far it's working!
